What is the Digital Services Act?

The Digital Services Act (hereinafter referred to as the DSA) came into force on 17 February 2024. It is a pioneering piece of European Union legislation that regulates certain online services, including online marketplaces, social networks and app stores.

Its objective is to regulate the digital environment to make it safer, more predictable, and more reliable, and to ensure that EU citizens can exercise the rights guaranteed by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

The Digital Services Act establishes a new regulatory framework to address challenges such as the circulation of illegal content online, lack of transparency in content moderation, the protection of minors online from illegal or harmful content and the safeguarding of consumer rights.
